Trees in The Netherlands are important and special.

To cut down a tree you need a permit. If you don’t get one then the council will be round and you will likely be fined.

But trees in The Netherlands are strange.

The thing is this country is well known for its wind!

or at least for its windmills.

It’s also very flat indeed.

The Dutch have of course been ingenious about the wind. They use trees to create natural barriers.

And if you look carefully you’ll see they are all planted in straight lines.

Curiously there seem to be virtually no trees here that are genuinely wild. If you look carefully at a coppice and move along it you’ll see all the trunks line up in diagonals. Often in two directions. It’s a bit weird.

But one thing I love about the trees here is this:
